High Risk Behavior

Why is it that some young folks (yours truly, for example) tempt providence by over-zealous actions creating risk that can seriously effect their lifetime happiness and prosperity? How does a parent forewarn them of the dangers such that they take reasonable caution? Seemingly, it is in the genes which ones will take the high road and which ones will seek the thorny trail.
