COVID - 19 (first hand experience)

It has been approximately 5 weeks since I contracted the virus. The first week was similar to a mild cold and, I wrongly concluded that “there isn’t much to this”. Although I only experienced a fever one night, the lethargy, loss of taste and appetite, and a sometimes violent cough struck hard during week two. By week three, recovery had begun as my energy and hunger began to return. Somewhat energized and bored, I began to work outside 2-3 hours a day in 85 degree plus temperatures (to Mary’s chagrin). Keep in mind, I hydrated continuously, sat down frequently to rest but felt good for a change. The sun and fresh air do wonders for the lungs and the soul. By the end of week three, I was sure the virus had dissipated , and I not only took beach walks with Mary, but I went back to weights in the gym and worked out in our salt pool, which was great therapy. I still experience some wheezing at night and an occasional dry cough (I have inhalers that control this remaining symptom) , but having been there before (respiratory issues emanating from Agent Orange or/and too much time is shooting houses), I think my lungs will mostly recover.

Since there is no real treatment for the virus, I am convinced that sunshine, fresh air, some level of exercise to make the lungs perform, and prayer are the only antidotes that affect recovery. I recommend that those infected begin this regimen as soon as possible. Begin slowly but your body will tell you how much you can/should do. If nothing else, get out of the house, take in the sunshine, and walk.

Finally, COVID-19 is another example of the human vulnerability to the pathogens lingering in our mist. My primary care physician completely discounted my age as a risk factor because of my fitness (Nonetheless, I miss the stadium steps that I ran at Marion and Riverside for 12 years), but did not discount my history of respiratory flareups. My counsel to friends and readers is that COVID-19 is a beast to some people but another reason that a sedentary lifestyle and excess weight have a significant effect on one’s quality of life and longevity.
