The Niger Ambush
In a combat zone, characterized by daily patrols and nightly ambushes, men experience emotions that range from stress, to fear, to terror, to rage (many Medals of Honor have been earned at this stage). The dread of the coming night's ambush patrol and its detailed preparation is even draining and then, there is the occasional horror after the fact.
Living in this extreme environment day and night creates a man-love that is unexplainable but encourages raw humor, a quiet faith in God, and personal relationships that are deep, mutually supporting, and can last a lifetime. In General Kelly's counsel to President Trump, he was correct. When men "fall", many are where they wanted to be and with whom they wanted to be at the moment.
It would be hard for President Trump to express those feelings having never experienced them. Likewise Congresswoman Wilson nor the soldier's family would comprehend them either. And, how would the media spokespersons understand?
Relative to the hype about the unit's request for help, in an ambush (especially, a close ambush), a unit can lose 4 or more in the moment of initiation. The initiation can create incredible havoc that include confusion, rapid seeking and movement to cover and concealment, return of fire, and tending to casualties. Calling for support may not occur until the leader(s) acquires "situational awareness." Yes, an hour seems like a long time, but that could have been affected by his awareness of the enemy's disposition, the nature and availability of support, and the confidence in the available support (drones?).
With the present media hype, a Congress where few have ever experienced ground combat combined with the Congresswoman's public criticism of the Commander-in-Chief, it appears that we may be headed for a high level investigation. I can just imagine the effect this is having on the Special Forces unit involved in the operation. From what I have read, I am surprised that they only had 4 killed in the action.
If evidence exists that serious mistakes were made during the encounter, an inquiry should be done at the organizational/operational level. But, get the media out of it. No interviews, no information, no status, no nothing. Moreover, there is no reason for a single Congressional person to interview on the subject except for personal exposure. I find this kind of profiling disgusting.
Let these heroes rest in peace and their families grieve in privacy.
