Picking Your Enemies

Prudent senior leaders never make an enemy before it is time.  They realize that whenever one intentionally makes an enemy, he unintentionally makes several others (their friends, partners, associates, etc.) who will add their resistance to that "original enemy."  According to author and business guru, Harvey Mackay," The clubhouse men of the world are just waiting for a chance to kick you in the ass.  You may not be watching them, but they're watching you (especially if you are successful - my emphasis), and the more arrogant you are, whether you are an eleven-year-old kid or some self-important business-type, the better the odds they'll find a way to get even."  Of course, there are times when it is necessary to make an enemy, but indiscriminate statements and actions, which alienate others are wrought with consequences.  And if there are nicks in one's armor, rest assured that every enemy will find them and exploit them.

This is the beginning of Section 42 of my next book, "Executive Courage - Some Times You Have to Walk Point."  I was editing the layout this morning when I realized that it was so appropriate in view of the friction between the executive and legislative branches of our government today.

I wrote this nearly 2 years ago before the election of our new president.  I wish I had had the opportunity to coach him on this undeniable reality that I learned the hard way.
